Make Every Bite Count with the Dietary Guidelines

The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans are out. For the first time the Guidelines provide recommendations by life stage, from birth through older adulthood, while focusing on dietary patterns and recognizing that more than half of adults have one or more diet-related chronic diseases. The guidelines: for about the first 6 months of life, exclusively feed infants human milk. At about 6 months, introduce infants to nutrient-dense complementary foods. Follow a healthy dietary pattern across the lifespan to meet nutrient needs. Customize and enjoy nutrient-dense food and beverage choices to reflect personal preferences, cultural traditions, and budgetary considerations. Focus on meeting food group needs with nutrient-dense foods and beverages and stay within calorie limits. A healthy dietary pattern includes: vegetables of all types, (whole) fruits, (whole) grains, dairy, protein foods, and oils (vegetable oils and oils in food). Limit foods and beverages higher in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium, and limit alcoholic beverages. Source: https://www.dietaryguidelines.gov/
