A prospective community-based follow-up study of 8423 elderly individuals in Netherlands found that use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) . The study was based on data from the Rotterdam Study involving adults 55 and older, mean age was 68.5 years and 58% were women. During a mean follow-up of 12.9 years, current use of NSAIDs and recent use (within 30 days after discontinuation of NSAIDs) were associated with an increased risk of AF compared with never-use adjusted for age, sex and cardiovascular risk factors. Other recent studies also have identified a link between NSAIDs and AF.
