A systematic review and meta-analysis of 26 randomized controlled trials found that the intake of dietary pulses (beans, chickpeas, lentils and peas) at a median dose of 130 g/d (about 1 serving daily) significantly lowered LDL cholesterol levels compared with the control diets (about 5% from baseline), although there were substantial variation in results between trials. Treatment effects on apolipoprotein B and non-HDL cholesterol were not observed. In a previous meta-analysis of 19 trials comparing statin use and nonstatin use with dietary interventions, a 1% reduction in LDL cholesterol translated to a 1% reduction in cardiovascular mortality.
