Mediterranean Diet Improves High-Density Lipoprotein Function

A randomized controlled trial revealed that a traditional Mediterranean diet (TMD), especially when enriched with virgin olive oil, improved HDL atheroprotective functions in humans. The study compared the effects of 2 TMDs, one enriched with virgin olive oil (TMD-VOO; n=100) and the other enriched with nuts (TMD-Nuts; n=100), with respect to a low-fat control diet (n=96) after a 1-year intervention. Both TMDs increased cholesterol efflux (reverse cholesterol transport) capacity relative to baseline. The TMD-VOO intervention decreased cholesteryl ester transfer protein activity (relative to baseline) and increased HDL ability to esterify cholesterol, paraoxonase-1 arylesterase (antioxidant properties ) activity, and HDL vasodilatory capacity (relative to control, respectively). All 3 diets increased the percentage of large HDL particles (relative to baseline). Adherence to a TMD has been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk and the potential to reduce the progression of age-related macular degeneration. Source: http://circ.ahajournals.org/
