Air Pollutions and Migraine Increase Cardiovascular Risk

A meta-analysis of epidemiological studies suggests that short-term or long-term exposure to some air pollutants may increase the risk of hypertension. Another large, prospective cohort study in women with more than 20 years of follow-up indicate a consistent link between migraine and cardiovascular disease events, including cardiovascular mortality. Short-term exposure to SO2, PM2.5 and PM10 were significantly associated with hypertension. Long-term exposure to NO2 and PM10 had significant associations with hypertension. Exposure to other ambient air pollutants (short-term exposure to NO2, O3, and CO and long-term exposure to NOx, PM2.5, and SO2) also had positive relationships with hypertension. Compared with women without migraine, migraine was associated with an increased risk for major cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, and angina/coronary revascularization procedures. Furthermore, migraine was associated with a significantly increased risk for cardiovascular disease mortality. The increased risk is small at the individual level but still important at a population level. Source: http://hyper.ahajournals.org/; http://www.bmj.com/
