Vitamin D Deficiency Associated with Dementia痴呆与维生素D缺乏有关

A prospective observational study in the US found that vitamin D deficiency is associated with a substantially increased risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer disease. The study included 1658 elderly ambulatory adults free from dementia, cardiovascular disease, and stroke between 1992–1993 and 1999 with a mean follow-up of 5.6 years. 171 participants developed all-cause dementia, including 102 cases of Alzheimer disease. The risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer disease markedly increased in participants who were severely vitamin D deficient (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D<25 nmol/L) and deficient (≥25 to <50 nmol/L) compared to participants with sufficient concentrations (≥50 nmol/L). The risk was adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, season of blood sampling, educational attainment, alcohol intake, and presence of depressive symptoms. The results are consistent with past studies that low levels of vitamin D in circulation are associated with increased likelihood of cognitive impairment and dementia.
