The FDA has reviewed the available data and does not believe the evidence supports the general use of aspirin for primary prevention of a heart attack or stroke. In fact, there are serious risks associated with the use of aspirin, including increased risk of bleeding in the stomach and brain, in situations where the benefit of aspirin for primary prevention has not been established. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends the use of aspirin for men ages 45 to 79 years when the potential benefit of a reduction in myocardial infarction outweighs the potential harm of an increase in gastrointestinal hemorrhage and for women ages 55 to 79 years when the potential benefit of a reduction in ischemic stroke outweighs the potential harm of an increase in gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The American Heart Association recommends using aspirin for primary prevention in patients with an elevated risk for coronary disease. There is a consensus that the benefits of aspirin outweigh the risks for secondary prevention.
